A Message from Chief Williams |
Welcome to the Mount Pleasant Fire Department which has provided fire suppression and emergency services since 1837. Over the past decades, we have evolved from an organization focused solely on fire fighting to one that interacts with the public on a daily basis. The Mount Pleasant Fire Department is a fire department deeply involved in the community it serves.
Our mission is to protect the lives and property of our citizens through proactive approaches in Fire & Life Safety Education, Engineering & Enforcement of Codes, Regulations & Ordinances, Emergency Medical Programs, and Fire Suppression.
Only through constant diligence, training, and an unswerving allegiance to the citizens of Mount Pleasant, can the ideals set forth in our mission be accomplished. To this end, we must all persevere to achieve the higher goal of extending the hand of service to all that may need us, be it our families, our citizens, or our fellow firefighters.
We provide the vital services you need, and rely on, day after day. Today, the fire department is composed of 116 paid personnel augmented by 14 volunteers. Firefighters work twenty-four hour rotating shifts. The corporate area and its surroundings are served by five strategically located fire stations. The fire department administrative office is located within the Town Municipal Complex. Our fire stations are staffed daily by 33 personnel.
In addition to protecting life and property, the Town's investment in fire defenses and prevention has resulted in direct savings in fire and homeowners' insurance. The cost of this insurance is based on the fire defenses and the insurance classification of a community. The Town of Mount Pleasant enjoys an "ISO Class TWO" rating.
Fire inspections are conducted semi-annually on all facilities open to the general public to ensure the safety of the patrons. Courtesy home inspections and smoke detector installations are just two of the programs available to the citizenry from the fire department. The department's goal is to protect our citizens by ensuring every home is protected by a working smoke detector.
The fire department works actively with the Charleston County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) to provide patient care and first responder services during and after emergencies. Mount Pleasant was the first fire department in the Charleston area to complete the first responder program. The fire department is also one of only six departments in the tri-county area with the capability to handle hazardous spills and materials.
In 2001, The Mount Pleasant Fire Department (MPFD) became the first government agency in South Carolina to receive accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) in New Orleans, Louisiana. We broke ground in South Carolina when Mount Pleasant became one of only 53 other fire agencies worldwide to have reached that level and the 51st agency in the United States. We expanded on that record, when we became one of 21 cities in the United States to have both fire and police departments accredited.
